One of the most difficult situations a family faces is when an elderly member can no longer fully care for himself or herself. There are many options available at that point, depending on the degree and type of disability, including an assisted living facility, a nursing home, hospice care, hospitalization, or moving the senior in with a family member who can provide care. And unfortunately some elderly people make do on their own as best they can, when they're really not safe doing so. Each of these options has its pros and cons. If none of them seems suitable, another option to consider is home health care. Home health care refers to care provided by one or more trained health professionals who make house calls for a certain number of hours per week. The patient is able to remain in their home, in familiar surroundings, which they almost always strongly prefer to moving to a facility. In terms of cost, home health care is the middle ground between expensive options like hospitals or nursing homes, and inexpensive options like a family member providing care. (Keep in mind, though, that while having a family member provide care keeps out of pocket costs down, there's the non-monetary value of that person's time, labor, stress, etc. to consider as well.) Some costs of home health care may be covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance, but that will differ and needs to be looked into on a case-by-case basis. There is a wide array of services that fall under the category of home health care, including the following: * Nurses For patients requiring a significant level of regular medical attention, registered nurses monitor vital signs, monitor medications, administer injections, provide pain management, provide post-surgical care, provide wound care, and more. * Physical therapists Physical, occupational, and speech therapists can assist with therapeutic exercises, provide help with prosthetics, provide training in the proper use of assistive devices, retrain people in language and basic skills (for instance after a stroke), provide advice on home modification and adaptive devices, and more. * Medical social workers Medical social workers assist patients and their families in obtaining financial assistance, community resources, and counseling. * Home care aides Some functions that do not require the level of medical training of a nurse may be carried out by home care aides. Aides assist with tasks of day-to-day living, such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and eating. Home health care can be an appropriate option to consider for seniors who are not fully functional and need more help than their family can provide, but who don't need 24 hour medical care or monitoring, such as at a hospital. The National Association for Home Care provides useful information about home health care, and assistance in locating and choosing a home health care provider. |
