Not               until               this               evening               had               I               ever               before               heard               of               the               term               health               equity.

First               was               when               I               turned               on               the               TV,               and               found               an               informative               program               on               PBS               called               Bringing               the               Water               Back.

They               were               talking               about               the               Gila               Indian               Reservation               in               Arizona.

The               next               mention               was               the               evening               news.

They               were               discussing               the               poorer               areas               of               Jacksonville,               Florida               .

Both               programs               brought               up               a               very               interesting               notion               that               health               and               longevity               are               directly               related               to               income               status.

In               the               case               of               the               Gila               Reservation               Indians,               their               health               began               to               decline               in               the               early               20th               century               when               water               was               diverted               off               of               the               Gila               River               to               provide               water               for               Phoenix               and               surrounding               more               affluent               suburbs.

As               water               left               the               reservation,               poverty               increased               as               the               people               had               been               farmers               and               relied               on               their               crops               as               their               main               income.

Now               that               the               water               was               gone,               they               had               no               livelihood.

As               poverty               set               in,               so               did               diseases               such               a               high               blood               pressure               and               diabetes.

Diabetes               now               affects               at               least               50               percent               of               the               population               on               the               reservation.

In               the               mid               20th               century,               the               statistics               were               at               about               13               percent.

The               difference               occurred               when               food               became               what               was               cheap               or               what               was               available               through               government               subsidy               programs.

The               Gila               Indians               had               relied               on               their               crops               to               feed               their               people,               and               now               fresh               produce               was               very               scarce.

(               PBS               Special,               Bringing               Back               the               Water,               April               10th,               2008               ,               9               p.m.

)
Local               news               stated               that               the               Florida               Department               of               Health               has               directly               linked               poor               health               with               poverty.

The               County               housing               Jacksonville               was               divided               into               zones               represented               by               color               coding.

The               red               code               was               the               poorest               area.

The               blue               zone               was               the               richest.

Health               was               the               best               in               the               blue               zone               and               not               surprisingly               was               the               worst               in               the               red               zone.

Particularly               diabetes               was               the               highest               in               the               red               zone.

Also,               it               had               the               highest               rate               of               teen               pregnancies,               STD,               Aids,               high               blood               pressure,               infant               mortality               and               the               list               goes               on               and               on.

What               has               happened               to               our               country               that               the               poorest               of               our               citizens               stand               no               chance               of               living               healthful               lives?

Luckily,               the               Florida               Department               of               Health               is               setting               forth               to               make               some               corrections               in               that               area.
In               Louisville,               Kentucky,               an               effort               is               being               made               to               correct               the               problem.

The               first               step               is               research               to               understand               the               issue.

The               Center               for               Health               Equity               has               looked               at               key               issues               that               lead               to               the               inequity               among               poor               people               and               minorities               as               it               relates               to               health               and               health               care.

How               we               live               and               our               economic               upbringing               has               a               lot               to               do               with               our               health,               the               researchers               have               found.

Lack               of               medical               care,               poor               diets,               poor               paying               jobs,               unhealthy               living               areas               are               all               a               part               of               the               problem.

People               with               money               can               afford               to               live               in               better               homes               in               upscale               areas.

But               a               poorer               person               may               be               stuck               with               their               100               year               old               home               filled               with               chemicals               and               asbestos.

They               have               no               other               options               than               to               continue               to               live               as               they               do.

While               those               more               economically               advanced               can               afford               the               best               food,               low               fat               items,               reduced               carbohydrate,               and               expensive               dinners               with               the               choicest               produce               and               meats,               the               poor               eat               what               they               can               afford.

Often               times,               the               cheap               diets,               provide               the               most               fat,               sugar               and               carbohydrates.

Everyone               knows,               these               lead               to               high               blood               pressure,               being               overweight,               and               diabetes,               not               to               mention               other               health               problems.

(               http://www.louisvilleky.gov/Health/equity)
Both               TV               shows,               plus               the               numerous               Web               sites               I               used               to               research               this               article,               state               that               the               solution               to               the               problem               is               more               related               to               how               officials               deal               with               the               issue.

Refurbishing               a               neighborhood,               bringing               fresh               water,               providing               health               clinics,               and               educating               people               about               good               nutrition               is               a               grass               roots               effort.

But               politicians               must               provide               the               funding               to               offer               programs,               incentives               and               solutions.
To               think               we               live               in               a               country               where               only               the               middle               class               or               rich               can               afford               appropriate               food,               chemical-free               housing,               proper               medical               care,               and               community               support               is               appalling.

We               say               we               are               the               home               of               the               free.

Maybe               we               should               change               that               to               the               home               of               the               rich.

Hopefully               our               political               officials               will               see               the               light               and               decide               to               help               all               Americans,               not               just               those               who               have               the               money               and               are               blessed               enough               to               be               able               to               "buy"               good               health.
